This painting turned out so lovely.  It just flew out of me in such a short time it amazed me. It is a welcoming piece so I named it "Home Again". This painting  will also be going to the show in a couple of days. The companion painting is below.

I painted this the same day but I struggled a little more with this one.  I think it turned out well though. I can't get enough of pastels. I also love the format and I think I will try doing more.

I love white Hollyhocks. In fact I love white flowers in general.The Beehive House in S.L.C, Utah has the most beautiful white, pink and almost burgundy hollyhocks. It is a never ending source for old fashioned flowers. It is defiantly worth seeing in the summer and early fall.

I took this Original watercolor painting and revamped it. It is now ready to sell at my art show coming up. This brought back lots of memories of a trip I took to Bath, England with my Mom, Sister and a few of my cousins. I followed these ladies around trying to get their picture. I loved the white hair. I wish I would have gotten their names so I could have sent them a copy of this painting

Finished this painting of the canal in North Logan last week. I'm getting ready for a show on Nov. 6th in down town Salt Lake. This will be part of the show among others that I will be posting soon.

This was the quick study of "Alpine view".  I love the bright colors and looseness by painting in a hurry.  I painted an under painting of Red oxide so that it would all be in harmony.

I needed to paint some chickens so this is my first attempt at  the subject. It was fun to just mess round a little and to try a few bolder strokes. Ready to start the final painting. I will post it tomorrow.

My obsession with doors

Once in awhile I like to dabble in photography. This photo of the temple doors is part of my obsession with doors. "Knock and it shall be opened, seek and ye shall find."   Such beautiful craftsmanship went into the making of this door.

This weathered old door I found in the Royal City in China. I'm not sure how old this door is but it caught my eye because of the texture of the crackled paint and the sun drenched red color.

Upper Stillwater

The upper Stillwater is a fabulous place to kayak, for great views of the mountains and to see wildlife of every kind. We had a great time with friends the day I snapped this photo reference. We were sitting on the bank having our lunch and taking it all in. When I finished this painting the other day it made me homesick for Montana. I can't wait for Summer so we can visit again. Next time, I will paint the kayaks.

I have been very busy painting lately and this one is fresh off the easel. The Sage brush was beautiful on the mountain side just above the Heber Valley. 

Watercolor Tutorial of White flowers

White flowers is a great subject to learn how to develop your watercolor techniques. I enjoy teaching how to paint white flowers because the student learns how to paint around the white space and learns the concept of painting negative spaces. It is also a good way to learn shadowing and nuances of color found in the whites.

The following is a tutorial of white magnolia blossoms:

I started with a full sheet of Arches 300# paper and drew the design with pencil. I chose to use large brushes for this size of painting (32 and 14 round) and later I use a smaller round  to get close to the edges.

I started with the background by wetting the paper and adding  Windsor Newton Pathalo Turquoise. I painted in sections so the water would not dry before I could cover the whole paper. Remember when you move on to another section to wet the paper first for better control.

Here you see that I have started to put the darks in by using Pathalo Turquoise and Quinacridone Sienna by Daniel Smith, and French Ultramarine blue in various amounts to give it a modeled look.

 This ended up taking about two passages of color to get it to this  point below.

At this point I moved to the blossoms and added very light glazes of Quinacridone Sienna around the bottom of the flower. I the painted the fist try at the branches using a combination of QS and FU

I realized I didn't like the branch on the bottom left  (see pic. #3) so I lightly scrubbed out the the color around the white with a Fritch Scrubber (available at Cheapjoes.com)  clear water and blotting lightly with a clean paper towel. I painted over the area with the background color after drying it thoroughly.

 I also started putting in the shadows making a blue grey from the colors above and strengthened the QS  color in the blossoms.

My next step is to finish painting the branches by adding dark's, the shadows in the blossoms and then give the background one more go round.

Try white flowers for your next painting. Don't forget to look for the slight nuances of color in your photo source and play with a little color to enhance your painting.

I finally finished this painting I started a few months ago. Now the blossoms have fallen on the square. I love to see the magnolias in the spring and I hope you will enjoy these until next year.

Dust off your Brushes

Well its that time again. I will be starting watercolor classes in February after a year of moving, traveling, moving again and enjoying family in between.
I am excited to begin and to get to know new students in the this new area.  So dust off your brushes everyone. 

 If you are in the Sandy,Utah vicinity join me for classes on Monday afternoon. I will be at the Hobby Lobby every Monday from 12:30 to 3:30 except for the first Monday of the month.

"Sweet Kisses" by Terry Moss

I am revisiting my watercolor paintings just for fun.This one I painted a little while ago. My daughter took a picture of her children and I couldn't resist painting this special moment. 

Brushes are such a personal thing. You can spend a lot of money trying to find just the right watercolor brush. My absolute favorite, hands down, brush is a sable and synthetic blend. the Dreamcatcher series set from cheapjoes.com. I love the that the brushes hold lots of water, have lots of spring and keep their point.
I never use my 100% sable brushes anymore. 
My favorite size is 14 and 8.
